Wine description for Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge AOC 2021 from Marcoux

Colour & Appearance
Deep, dense purple with delicate violet reflections, the rim already showing initial lightening – a visual harbinger of the complexity to come.
Nose
A fascinating duality of dark fruit and deep spice. Morello cherry, blackberry and blueberry meet juniper berry, mixed pepper and bay leaves. The earthy depth impresses: roasted coffee, bitter chocolate, complemented by surprisingly fresh notes of mint and kaffir lime leaves. An aromatic kaleidoscope that shifts between Provence garrigue and Mediterranean spice.
Palate
The attack opens invitingly with warming fruit between red and black. The gripping acidity structure balances perfectly with the fruit fullness. Remarkable: the greenish tannin provides meatiness, juiciness and refreshing tension all at once. A consumed, almost bloody character emerges – rustic in the best sense, with that southern French directness that tempts you to keep drinking.
Finish
Persistently spicy with present, yet never dominant tannin structure. The fruit fades slowly whilst herbal spice and mineral notes linger.
Terroir & Origin
From 13 different parcels with variable soil types – this diversity is the secret to the complexity. Domaine de Marcoux has farmed its vineyards organically since 1991, which is reflected in the clarity and authenticity of the wine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
80% Grenache Noir, complemented by 10% Mourvèdre, 7% Syrah and 3% Cinsault. Completely destemmed, cold macerated, temperature-controlled fermentation with 5-week maceration. Maturation for 18 months primarily in cement tanks, supplemented by large wooden vats and 350l oak barrels – a vinification that places fruit and terroir at the forefront.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Côte de Boeuf with truffle potato gratin, grilled scorpionfish with Mediterranean roasted vegetables or surprisingly also with whole roasted celeriac with parsley pesto – the wine tolerates bold flavours and earthy components.
Special Features
A Châteauneuf that combines the power of the 2021 vintage with organic precision. Already accessible now, but will benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age.
