Wine description for Morey-Saint-Denis „En la rue de Vergy“ blanc AOC 2023 by Bruno Clair

Character
A white Burgundy of quiet elegance and precise expression – rare, almost contemplative. Morey-Saint-Denis is a commune one associates primarily with great red Pinot Noirs; a white wine from this vineyard site therefore possesses from the outset a certain outsider quality that makes it all the more interesting. Bruno Clair, one of the most reliable houses of the Côte de Nuits, understands how to avoid making an effect of this particularity, instead simply crafting a wine of inner coherence.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site „En la rue de Vergy“ lies in the northern part of Morey-Saint-Denis, near the border with Gevrey-Chambertin. The soils of the Côte de Nuits are characterised here by calcareous subsoil with clayey components – a terroir that lends the Chardonnay structural tension and mineral depth without pushing it towards opulence. The 2023 vintage brought warm, dry conditions to Burgundy, producing ripe, aromatically expressive wines – with careful harvesting and pleasingly preserved freshness and acidity structure.
Grape variety & Vinification
Pure Chardonnay, as Burgundian tradition prescribes for white AOC wines of this appellation. Bruno Clair works with the respect of a craftsman who knows that great terroir cannot tolerate excess. The ageing likely follows – in keeping with the house style – restrained oak usage, allowing the origin to speak rather than the cellar. With 13.0 % Vol. and a dry profile, the wine displays balance between ripeness and freshness.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine for the table, not for the display cabinet. Excellent with sole fillet with beurre blanc, with lobster or scallops in restrained butter preparation. Aged Comté or Gruyère also pair exceptionally well. For those preferring something more down-to-earth: a classic poulet rôti à la crème from Burgundian cuisine would be a positively ideal accompaniment.
