Wine Description for Vignaverde Sicilia Grilo DOC 2023 by Marco de Bartoli

Colour & Appearance
Radiant golden yellow with delicate silvery reflections – a wine that already promises freshness and vibrancy in the glass.
Nose
Clearly defined fruit of apple and pear, underpinned by yeasty notes and a fine almond bitterness. Wild herbs and freshly mown grass lend the bouquet its characteristic “green” character, whilst a saline sea breeze reveals its maritime origins. Precise and inviting in equal measure.
Palate
On the palate, a wonderful texture unfolds – juicy like a ripe fig, its sweetness perfectly balanced by a refreshing acidity. The saline minerality is pronounced, almost tangible, whilst fine phenolics provide structure without heaviness. At just 12.5% alcohol, the wine remains elegant and moreish, the spicy note in the finish simply makes you want another sip.
Finish
Medium length with spicy accents and lingering salinity. The freshness remains present, the wine bids farewell with appetising clarity.
Terroir & Origin
Marco de Bartoli is among the pioneers of modern Sicilian winemaking. His Vignaverde line from the DOC Sicilia impressively demonstrates how indigenous grape varieties can convey the character of their provenance – Mediterranean warmth meets maritime freshness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Grillo, the classic Sicilian white wine grape, is vinified here with respect and restraint. The wine benefits from controlled fermentation and brief yeast ageing, which lends it complexity without masking the primary fruit.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Made for fennel and orange salad with Taggiasca olives, chilled green pea soup with Parma ham crostini or skate fillet with confit tomato and thyme gnocchi. Generally an ideal companion to shellfish, grilled fish and Mediterranean starters.
Special Features
A wine that sets benchmarks in its price segment and makes many Sicilian competitors pale by comparison. Authentic, characterful and with impressive value for money – precisely what one would expect from an entry-level wine from the de Bartoli family.
