The Pietranera comes from de Bartoli's second vineyard on Pantelleria, a volcanic island southwest of Sicily on the same latitude as Tunis. There, the Muscat d'Alexandrie is called Zibbibo and is usually vinified as a dessert wine, until Marco de Bartoli began to vinify the Zibbibo dry in 1989. In the two north-facing contrade Cufurà and Ghirlandaan, the old vines thrive in low single-vineyard training for this profoundly mineral wine. Fermented in steel followed by six months of maturation on the fine lees.
Color
Pale yellow with silver tapered rim.
Nose
Delicate and joyful, the 2022 Pietranera from Marco de Bartoli smells like a huge bouquet of flowers - lily of the valley, lilac, lime and orange blossom outline its nose. Grown on the black soils of Pantelleria, these
floral cascades topped by broom and oleander, a slightly smoky note in the overtone range provides the extra portion of funk.
Mouth
The floral broadside of the nose is congenially balanced by the salty minerality thanks to the dark volcanic tuff soils. The fruit is small, white-fleshed and friable and subordinates itself willy-nilly to the wine's fragrant overall concept. With a silky structure, it flows over the palate as light as a feather and only shows what kind of fragrantly light masterpieces are possible in the deepest south of Sicily, but at the same time elevates Zibbibo as a variety for dry white wine to a completely new stage.
