Wine
Marco de Bartoli, Marsala Vergine Riserva 1988
To the wine
The Marsala Vergine is not filled up as usual with warmed up and caramelized Mistella must, but exclusively with best Acquavite. It was stored for 27 years in different sized old casks made of oak and walnut wood.
Color
dark amber
Nose
The nose is almost ethereally fragrant, dry and marked by the connection of old Marsala with the sea. Notes of dried figs, dates, oranges and orange peel combine with green walnuts and a hint of salt, seaweed and anchovies. If you close your eyes, you have the impression of having the essence of Sicily in your glass.
Palate
The Vergine from the year 1988 is extremely delicate and fine. It surprises at first with its dryness, which one is not used to from a Marsala. But then the immense depth and complexity of this exceptional Marsala becomes clear. The complexity is not overwhelming, but downright pleasant. The wine inspires to meditate, to indulge and to linger. It reminds of a Cognac or Armagnac of best quality, of course, also shows on the palate what the nose already indicates orange, leather, walnut, tangerine peel and bitter chocolate.
Food recommendations by Christoph Raffelt
- Cheese selection with salty cheeses
- salted almonds, nuts, dried fruits
- A big cognac snifter, a fireplace, time...
