Wine Description for Pinot Blanc from Loess 2023 by Franz Keller

Colour & Appearance
Rich golden yellow with bright reflections – unusually intense in colour depth for a young Pinot Blanc, suggesting ripe fruit and possibly skin contact during maceration.
Nose
Here a fascinating contrast reveals itself: initially the wine appears surprisingly warm and opulent. Mirabelle plum, khaki and a hint of mango dominate, complemented by fully ripe peaches and pears as well as caramelised quince. Behind these, spicy notes of heated fennel seed and star anise build up, accentuated by juniper and white pepper. A bread-like component – rye bread crust – lends depth, whilst delicate dried fruits shimmer in the background. A complex, generously proportioned aromatic profile.
Palate
Surprising turn: on the palate the wine presents itself considerably leaner and tauter than the nose would suggest. The fruit shifts from yellow to green – lime, unripe mango and yellow apples now dominate the profile. Juicy, pithy, crisp. The herbal notes come to the fore: lemon balm, thyme and chervil provide freshness. Haptically the wine lives from its phenolic structure, which remains tense yet refined. Restrained and invigorating at once.
Terroir & Origin
The name gives it away: this Pinot Blanc comes from loess soil, characteristic of Baden. Franz Keller manages first-class vineyard sites at Kaiserstuhl, where the chalky soils impart minerality and structure to the wine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Blanc in its Baden interpretation – presumably vinified with skin contact, which explains the phenolic texture and colour intensity. At a moderate 12% alcohol the wine remains elegant and inviting to drink.
Food Pairing Recommendations
With pan-fried sea fish, scallops or veal schnitzel with lemon. The herbal notes harmonise perfectly with asparagus (white or green), fennel and orange salad or goat’s cheese. Also an exciting choice with Asian dishes featuring lemongrass and coriander.
Special Characteristics
A Pinot Blanc of contrasts: the discrepancy between an opulent nose and a lean, herb-driven palate makes it exceptionally intriguing. A wine that invites contemplation – typical of Franz Keller’s differentiated signature.
