Wine description for the Enselberg Jechtingen Pinot Noir 1G VDP Erste Lage 2022 from Franz Keller

Colour & appearance

A precise, medium cherry red colour with brilliant transparency, typical of a finely vinified Pinot Noir from a cooler terroir.

Nose

Impressively precise and focussed. The aromas reveal an intense but never overripe cherry fruit, underpinned by a complex symphony of wild berries and plums. Undergrowth and autumnal foliage lend the wine a Burgundian depth, while the subtle smoky note testifies to the careful use of barriques. The cool, crisp expression reveals its volcanic origins.

Palate

The true mastery of the Franz Keller winery is evident on the palate. Elegance dominates over raw power, the fruit remains precise and lively. The tannin is fine-grained and spicy in structure without ever dominating. The piquant acidity gives the wine a nervy, sinewy texture and promises considerable ageing potential. The moderate alcohol content of 12.5% emphasises the finesse of this Pinot Noir, which combines complexity with drinkability.

General information

Friedrich Keller deliberately reclassified this wine from the GG classification to Erste Gewächs (1G) - not as a demotion, but as a strategic repositioning. The vines, Burgundy clones from 1999 and 2003, are rooted in volcanic rock with a loess layer. The 18-month maturation in French oak (40% new) and the spontaneous fermentation to 1.2 g residual sugar reflect the craftsmanship.

Food pairing suggestions

Its elegance and structure predestine this wine for fine dining. Excellent with Wild fowlin particular Squab with wild mushrooms. Also to Saddle of veal with reduced jus or truffled risotto an excellent choice.

Special features

A prime example of the new generation of German Pinot Noir - precise, terroir-orientated and with international class. The decision to classify this wine as 1G allows it to show its more accessible personality without compromising on quality. A wine that masterfully bridges the gap between Burgundian tradition and Baden identity.
