Colour & Appearance

Dense purple with bright, violet reflections.

Nose

Initially presenting a cool, subtly reductive style, it opens up with charming floral-spicy notes of lilac, violet, hibiscus, white pepper and sage. Beneath lies wild, juicy fruit of wild raspberries, sour cherries, Morello cherries and plums with a fine, cool-mineral streak.

Palate

Slender, filigree and with a thrilling drinkability. A finely chiselled fruit meets crisp acidity and a gently astringent tannin structure. The fresh, small-berried fruit notes are reminiscent of focused redcurrant juice – straightforward, profoundly serious and full of finesse.

Terroir & Origin

Matthieu Barret leads Domaine du Coulet in the northern Rhône in its seventh generation. His vines are rooted in steep granite terraces carved into the rock. The microclimate and uncompromising work in the vineyards lend the Syrah its cool, racy style.

Grape Variety & Vinification

Single-varietal Syrah. Barret strictly avoids wooden casks and relies on concrete to capture the pure, unadulterated fruit. Since 2002, the vineyards have been farmed biodynamically according to Demeter standards, using mules instead of tractors. The wines are crafted with minimal sulphur, no fining and no filtration.

Food Pairings

Pairs brilliantly with venison goulash with celeriac purée and Brussels sprouts or juicy pan-fried lamb chops with parsley pesto. Equally delicious for vegetarians alongside a beetroot bake with tomatoes, feta and walnuts.

Particularities

An exceptionally fresh, invigorating Syrah at a slender 12.5% ABV, demonstrating just how elegant and lively the grape variety can taste entirely without oak influence.
