Wine Description for Côtes Du Rhône „No Wine’s Land“ rouge AOP 2020 by Du Coulet

Colour & Appearance
Dense, saturated purple with vibrant violet reflections – a wine that already promises energy and depth in the glass.
Nose
The nose initially presents itself cool and reserved, subtly marked by a delicate reduction that lends the wine an intriguing tension. Behind this unfold floral notes of lilac, violet and a hint of hibiscus. The fruit appears wild and untamed: wild raspberry, sour cherry and sweet cherry, complemented by preserved morello cherries and ripe plum. A cool, metallic undertone along with notes of white pepper and sage lend the whole a precise, northern Rhône spiciness.
Palate
On the palate, the elegance continues seamlessly. Slender, racy and marked by remarkable drinkability – this wine has nonchalance without losing seriousness. The fruit appears cool and small-berried, almost blackcurrant juice-like in its freshness. The tannin is delicate and well-integrated, the acidity crisp and invigorating. A wine that demands no attention – and yet commands it nonetheless.
Finish
Medium-length, fresh and characterised by a pleasant astringency that empties the glass faster than expected. A finish with character and honesty.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Syrah from the northern Rhône, vinified by Matthieu Barret of Domaine Du Coulet. With merely 12.5% alcohol, this wine demonstrates how much finesse and depth are possible when one deliberately eschews overripeness and heaviness. A Côtes du Rhône with the heart of a Crozes-Hermitage.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Ideal with venison goulash with celeriac purée and Brussels sprouts, with pan-fried lamb chops with parsley pesto and glazed parsnips or – surprisingly harmonious – with a beetroot gratin with tomatoes, feta and walnuts.
Special Characteristics
An everyday wine with ambition – rarely does one encounter a Côtes du Rhône that so effortlessly unites accessibility and complexity. Matthieu Barret proves that great winemaking requires no great prices. Served cool, a pleasure that is second to none.
