Wine Description for Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru „Les Charmes“ AOC 2023 by Bruno Clair

Character
Chambolle-Musigny is regarded as the most tender, most poetic commune of the Côte de Nuits – and no Premier Cru embodies this reputation quite as aptly as Les Charmes. The name alone promises seduction. Bruno Clair’s interpretation stands for Burgundian Pinot Noir in its most elegant, restrained form: not a wine that demands attention loudly, but one that commands it quietly and naturally. At 13.0% vol., the alcohol remains discreetly in the background, allowing the terroir to have its say.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Les Charmes extends across the southern part of the appellation, where soils of calcareous clay over limestone bedrock impart a particular finesse and accessibility to the wine. The Burgundy 2023 vintage was warm and dry, producing early-ripening, concentrated fruit – yet in Chambolle, where the microclimate and exposure gently temper the warmth, the grapes retained that cool tension which makes this appellation so unmistakable.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir is nowhere more in its element than in the finest vineyard sites of the Côte de Nuits. Bruno Clair, with roots in the legendary Domaine Clair-Daü and based in Marsannay, works with the care and restraint of a craftsman for whom terroir is sacred. Ageing in Burgundy barrels – traditional, with measured use of new oak – aims not to impress, but to achieve precision and transparency: the wine should speak, the winemaker remain silent.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The silky texture and cool fruit depth of this wine make it an ideal companion to classic French cuisine. Recommended pairings include Coq au Vin, duck breast with cherry sauce or a mature Époisses. Grilled lamb rack with Provençal herbs also harmonises beautifully with the wine’s structure and elegance. For those who prefer something simpler: a good mushroom risotto is entirely sufficient.
