Wine Description for Burg Layer Riesling Schlossberg 1G 2023 by Diel

Colour & Appearance
Pale golden yellow with distinctive green reflections – a play of colour that already visually announces the youthful freshness of this Riesling.
Nose
Delicate, positively aristocratic aromatic interplay: cool slate notes dominate initially, accompanied by smoky hints that evoke wet stone. Beneath this shimmer lime and green apple. With air contact, the wine opens further and reveals delicate floral aromas as well as subtly herbal nuances – a nasal experience of remarkable precision.
Palate
On the palate, the youthful tension of this Riesling becomes apparent: a provocative acidity meets fresh citrus and apple fruit. The wine is still somewhat closed at present, but you can sense its enormous potential. Taut, mineral-driven, with a structure built for years to come. This is Riesling in its purest form – uncompromising and authentic.
Finish
Long, cool and mineral-driven with a lingering echo of citrus peel and slate. The acidity carries far and leaves a refreshing, almost saline impression.
Terroir & Origin
The VDP.Erste Lage Burg Layer Schlossberg on the Nahe extends over 1.3 hectares and is characterised by heavily weathered red slate. This soil imparts the Riesling with its characteristic minerality and cool elegance – a terroir that ranks among Germany’s finest vineyard sites.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Riesling, gently pressed and fermented with natural yeasts in multi-year-old oak casks from local forests and aged in wood. This traditional vinification respects the fruit and allows the terroir to take centre stage.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Pan-fried turbot, scallops with lemon butter, roasted veal brisket or aged alpine cheese. The wine demands substantial, classical cuisine that matches its structure.
Special Characteristics
A true long-distance runner that will benefit enormously from further bottle age. In 3-5 years it will unfold to its full splendour. Those with patience will be richly rewarded.
