Wine Description for Burg Layer Riesling Schlossberg 1G 2023 by Diel

Colour & Appearance
Pale golden yellow with lively green reflections – a wine that displays its youth openly.
Nose
The nose is of striking precision and delicacy. Cool, mineralic slate notes and a subtle smoke form the characteristic backbone, whilst lime and green apple float above with crystalline clarity. With a little air, the wine opens to delicate floral notes and fine herbal hints – an unmistakable terroir portrait of the Nahe.
Palate
On the palate, the Schlossberg demonstrates what the Nahe can achieve in a great vintage: a vibrant, nervy-precise acidity structure, carried by fresh citrus fruit and crisp apple. The wine is lean, focused and possessed of a tension reminiscent of a drawn bow. Still young and closed, it nonetheless unmistakably hints at its enormous potential.
Finish
Long, saline-mineralic and characterised by fine slate spice. The finish lingers – cool, clear and utterly invigorating.
Terroir & Origin
The Burg Layer Schlossberg is a VDP. Erste Lage of merely 1.3 hectares in the Nahe. The soil of heavily weathered red slate lends the wine its unmistakable minerality and cool spice – a terroir that is palpable in every sip.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Riesling, gently pressed and fermented with natural yeasts. Maturation and storage in multi-year wooden casks from domestic oak forests – a traditional, artisanal approach that gives terroir pride of place.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine for fine dining: pike-perch fillet with beurre blanc, lobster with citrus butter or a classic roast veal with herb sauce. A mature Munster or robust Bergkäse would also beautifully mirror its minerality.
Special Characteristics
A true long-distance runner: those with the patience to cellar this wine for five to ten years will be rewarded with a fully developed, complex Riesling. Drinking it now is possible – but waiting is worthwhile.
