Tasting note
Character
A Pinot Noir of quiet intensity, combining the cool grace of high-altitude vineyards with the depth of a Premier Cru. The 2021 vintage, classically cool and demanding, bestows upon it a slender, almost filigree structure at just 12.5 per cent alcohol. Fine red fruit, vibrant acidity and a long, linear finish define this wine, which impresses through elegance rather than power.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Vignes Franches is among the Premier Crus of Beaune, the historic heart of the Côte de Beaune. Boris Champy farms his twelve hectares in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune around Nantoux at altitudes between 377 and 421 metres – a decisive advantage in the era of climate change. Here, the grapes ripen a week later than on the lower-lying Côte, preserving their natural freshness and tension. Hedgerows, stone walls and orchards shape the landscape.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir in its purest Burgundian expression. The estate has been farmed biodynamically since 1984, making it the first Demeter-certified domaine in Burgundy. Champy, who previously worked at Dominus Estate in the Napa Valley and as estate manager at Clos des Lambrays, relies on spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, gentle extraction and subtle use of wood. Rare sélections massales from pre-phylloxera vines contribute to the exceptional complexity.
Food Pairings
The finely chiselled structure and cool fruit of the 2021 vintage make this Beaune an ideal partner for pan-fried duck breast with cherries, Burgundian-style coq au vin or young Comté. It also reveals its full expressive potential alongside porcini mushrooms – whether in a risotto or simply sautéed in butter. If opening now, allow the wine an hour to breathe; those who let it rest for another three to five years will be rewarded with silky depth.
