Primitivo

Primitivo is deeply rooted in the south of Italy, where the grape flourishes on the limestone-rich soils of Puglia, revealing its dark-fruited splendour. Genetically identical to the Croatian Tribidrag, it owes its name to the early ripening of its berries. In the glass, this power manifests itself in the form of ripe cherries, plums, and a fine spiciness reminiscent of Mediterranean maquis. When crafted with artisanal, nature-conscious methods, the variety reveals a vibrant acidity and a fine tannic framework that harmoniously balances its dense body.

Just how unadorned and thoroughly drinkable this variety can taste is demonstrated by the estate Petracavallo with its single-varietal Primitivo. Here, the ripe fruit is brought to bottle entirely without heavy use of oak, allowing a juicy freshness and the characteristic wildness of the Puglian landscape to take centre stage.
