grenache gris
Grenache Gris or also called Garnacha Roja is a fragrant and full-bodied variety. A close relative of Garnacha (Grenache) with pink berry skin.
Grenache Gris, quasi a combination of Grenache Blanc and PINOT GRIS, is permitted in exactly the same departments of southern France as Grenache Blanc. In 2009, a total of 1,699 ha of Grenache Gris were planted, mainly in Roussillon, but also in Languedoc and in the south of the Rhône. It is often used in white blends, especially with Grenache Blanc or Macabeu (MACABEO), but also with different varieties from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape recipe. In Roussillon, Matassa blends 70 % Grenache Gris with 30 % Macabeu to produce a racy and complex white wine, while Le Roc des Anges's Iglesia Vella is a perfumed and polished Grenache Gris. Domaine Jones sometimes adds a tiny percentage of Muscat to the majority Grenache Gris wine to produce a rich and expressive, slightly dried version.
In Spain, only 71 ha (175 acres) of this grey or pink Garnacha were grown in 2008, mainly in Navarre and Castilla-La Mancha.
