Wine description for Riesling Kabinett 2023 from Schätzel

Visual impression

In the glass, the Schätzel Kabinett reveals a delicate, almost translucent straw yellow colour with vivid green reflections that play like sunlight on an early morning Rhine stream - a visual announcement of its youthful vitality and precise signature.

Nose

The aroma unfolds with the precision of a watchmaker's movement from the Rheinhessen region. Here we encounter an olfactory mosaic of crisp Granny Smith apples and lemony freshness, underpinned by subtle notes of unripe peach and sun-kissed mirabelle plum. What particularly characterises this Riesling is an unexpected hint of raspberry - a fleeting moment of red fruit that expands the classic Riesling palette and bears witness to the special microclimates of Schätzel's vineyards.

The pronounced herbal component is particularly noteworthy - like a walk through a dewy herb garden on a summer morning. Lemon balm, Thyme and Coriander mingle with the spiciness of white pepper - a testament to the barren, chalky soils on which Kai Schätzel's vines have their roots deep in the geological history of Rheinhessen.

Palate

The true mastery of the winemaker is evident on the palate. The Kabinett moves across the tongue with the grace of a dancer - slender and precise like a foil. The moderate residual sweetness, typical of the Kabinett category, is perfectly balanced by a crystal-clear, almost salty acidity structure, reminiscent of the minerality of the limestone soils on which Schätzel's vines thrive.

With only 7% alcohol, this wine epitomises the renaissance of classic German Riesling - light-footed, not saturating, with an almost floating quality. Schätzel's philosophy of careful intervention in the cellar and his deep understanding of the Nierstein terroir can be recognised here. The fruit always remains present, but it never dominates - rather, it forms the canvas on which the mineral and herbaceous nuances can unfold their fascinating interplay.

General information

Kai Schätzel belongs to the new generation of Rheinhessen winegrowers who have woken the region from its slumber. He has consistently cultivated his vineyard, which has been family-owned since 1850, according to organic principles. The Riesling grapes for this Kabinett come from older vines on the red slate soils of the Niersteiner Pettenthal and Hipping - two of the most historically significant sites on the Rhine, whose steep exposure to the river creates a unique microclimate.

The 2023 vintage in Rheinhessen presents itself as classically cool with a pronounced acidity structure - ideal conditions for a Kabinett of this precision and finesse. With its moderate residual sweetness and low alcohol content, this wine epitomises the renaissance of traditional German Riesling, which once dominated the wine lists of the world's great restaurants.

Food pairing suggestions

This Kabinett is a versatile companion at the table. It harmonises brilliantly with the Asian cuisine - especially with Thai dishes like a Papaya salad or green currywhose sharpness is elegantly cushioned by the fine residual sweetness. Equally remarkable is the combination with Seafood - a Raw sea bass tartare with citrus zest and coriander would wonderfully emphasise the mineral and herbal nuances of the wine.

In traditional German cuisine, it finds its place alongside Asparagus with hollandaise or a light pork schnitzel. Not forgetting its quality as an aperitif - served chilled at around 8°C, it is the perfect way to open an evening meal, revitalising the palate and heightening the senses.
