Wine Description for Steiner Riesling 17-22 by Schätzel
- Colour & Appearance
- Rich straw yellow with a silky matt shimmer and natural cloudiness – an unfiltered wine that makes no attempt to hide its authenticity.
- Nose
- An aromatic fireworks display of the most distinctive kind: flor yeast dominates with its characteristic spice, accompanied by roasted nuts, almonds and the enticing aroma of fresh yeast pastries. Herbal nuances of chamomile meet green and yellow apples. The aromatics are mellow, complex and entirely free from obvious fruit – a wine that challenges the intellect and rewards the senses.
- Palate
- Silky-creamy texture with juicy softness on the attack. The orchestral acidity stretches across the palate with bright luminosity, whilst the yeast lends the wine a substantial, fluffy-soft suppleness. Structurally built around a vertical acid spine that gives it its distinctive tactile quality, lightness and brisk pace. With just 10.5% alcohol, this Riesling displays remarkable precision and drinkability.
- Finish
- Ethereally cool with a long, vibrant aftertaste – a finale that underscores the wine’s complexity once more.
- Terroir & Origin
- From the legendary Roten Hang in Rheinhessen, where Kai Schätzel has been working with sustainable, organic and biodynamic methods since 2008. Dry farming and unhurried ripening create self-sufficient, healthy vines as a response to climate change.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Riesling from vintages 2017-2022 produced using the Solera method. The grapes are harvested according to the self-developed „Golden Cut“ principle, foot-trodden and left on the skins for a week. Spontaneous fermentation in large and half-large wooden casks, maturation under flor yeast in a 5000-litre barrel. Unfiltered, unfined, unsulphited.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Bagna Cauda, sashimi of oily fish such as mackerel or sardines, Szegediner Gulasch – the wine pairs well with both delicate and robust flavours.
- Special Characteristics
- A radically individual Riesling that shatters conventional expectations. The Solera method and maturation under flor yeast make it one of the most unusual and exciting German Rieslings of our time.
