Nose
To this day, you can't help but be taken aback when you have a Merlot from the southern Rhône or the IGP Mediterrannée in front of you. Normally, if you didn't know Vincent Rochette and his Domaine Roche-Audran, you would say that they don't go together at all. Merlot quickly becomes alcoholic and clumsy with too much sun, but what you find here in the glass is the exact opposite. There is little of the heat of the south in the flavour. Rather, the 2021 offers Merlot A blend of rather crunchy plums, blackberries and black cherries with crushed stone, some dry earth and a hint of violets and roses. Taken together, the effect is sensual, silky and fresh.
Palate
On the palate, the ageing in cement tanks ensures a fine texture, which is emphasised by the silky but present tannin. The drinking flow and cool vein that characterise the Merlot are in the foreground. At the same time, the wine still has a southern flavour with its hints of liquorice and garrigue. Vincent Rochette manages to harmonise ripeness and coolness, juiciness and a pleasant down-to-earth core. This is a charming, slender and lively wine that has a lot to offer and is uncomplicated in the best possible way.
