Wine Description for Piandorino Tuscany IGT 2020 by Pian Dell’Orino
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep cherry red with a dense, concentrated centre and bright, luminous reflections towards the rim – a visual promise of Tuscan elegance.
- Nose
- Inviting and multifaceted, this Sangiovese presents itself with dark fruit of plum and elderberry, accentuated by blackcurrant and raspberry. The Mediterranean soul reveals itself through rosemary, sage and the characteristic scent of cypress and pine groves. Undergrowth, resinous tree bark and a hint of black pepper lend the bouquet earthy depth and spicy complexity.
- Palate
- Dark and sublime, the wine flows across the tongue with silky, almost smooth texture – pure finesse. The Sangiovese typicity reveals itself in fine tannins and a gripping acidity structure that coats the palate whilst simultaneously inviting the next sip. The fruit recedes in favour of spicy and earthy notes that hold race and elegance in perfect balance.
- Finish
- Long and spicy-earthy in character, with drying fruit that creates space for the mineral and Mediterranean components. Remarkably persistent and engaging.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from vineyards between 320 and 480 metres altitude with south-easterly exposure. The soils – calcareous clay, weathered marl, blue-grey Pliocene limestone and Alberese and Flysch soils – give the wine its characteristic minerality and structure. Vines aged 7 to 13 years from the vineyard sites Moro, Cancello Rosso and Pian Bassolino.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Sangiovese from young vineyards and experimental parcels. Following meticulous hand-harvesting and sorting, spontaneous fermentation took place with 18 days of skin contact. Ageing lasted 17 months in 15-hectolitre barrels – an approach that respects both fruit clarity and terroir expression equally.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Perfect with brasato with dried pointed peppers, lamb rack with broad beans and olive-rosemary jus or surprisingly with monkfish from the charcoal grill with smoked red pepper. The acidity structure harmonises beautifully with hearty braised dishes and grilled meat.
- Special Features
- The Piandorino is the accessible entry point into Pian Dell’Orino’s portfolio and impressively demonstrates that even base wines from this producer offer depth, character and authentic terroir expression.
