Wine Description for Planetes „Classic“ 2019 by Familia Nin Ortiz
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep, impenetrable black-red that retains its colour intensity right to the rim – a visual promise of the concentration and power that this Priorat embodies.
- Nose
- Opulent and multi-layered, the 2019 presents itself with an impressive aromatic palette: black cherries, preserved dark berries and plum paste form the fruity foundation. Earthy notes overlay these, along with dark chocolate, wild Mediterranean herbs and a fascinating interplay of spices: pepper, clove and cardamom. The nose already reveals the elegant complexity of this wine.
- Palate
- On the palate, a dense tapestry of dark fruits unfolds, caressing the tongue. The herbal and spice aromas from the nose return, lending the wine additional depth. Despite its power, the Planetes displays remarkable vibrancy: youthful acidity and a present yet fine-grained tannin structure create tension and drinking flow. A wine that doesn’t satiate but seduces you to take the next sip.
- Finish
- Persistent and spicy, with lingering fruit and spice notes that underscore its Mediterranean origin.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from the climatically favoured zone of Porrera in Priorat. 22-year-old Grenache terraces and 13-year-old Carignan vines on the characteristic slate soils yield minimal yields of just 16 hl/ha – pure concentration and expression of terroir.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- The cuvée of Grenache and Carignan was macerated with whole grapes for four weeks and fermented spontaneously with wild yeasts in large French oak barrels. 18 months of maturation in 3200-litre barrels and a 1000-litre amphora lent the wine additional complexity without masking the fruit.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Served lightly chilled, the Planetes pairs beautifully with lamb rack with glazed bacon beans, duck with oriental spice crust and couscous or a gratin of salsify and aubergine with rosemary jus.
- Special Features
- Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz manage their spectacular steep vineyards entirely biodynamically – worked only with mules. The oenologist, who already achieved world renown at the legendary Clos Erasmus, vinifies wines of the absolute top class here.
