Wine description for El Sequé 2019 by El Sequé

Colour & Appearance
Luminous cherry red with enticing violet reflections – a wine that already promises energy and depth in the glass.
Nose
The nose is a Mediterranean feast: a lavish cornucopia of blueberries, blackberries and elderberries, underscored by a fine, almost creamy lactic note reminiscent of cherry cream sweets. Beneath this lie cool, ethereal layers of eucalyptus, mint and liquorice. Clove and black pepper add spicy accents. Generous, inviting and possessed of a surprising elegance that one wouldn’t necessarily expect from Monastrell from Alicante.
Palate
On the palate, El Sequé unfolds with wave-like power – juicy, spicy and remarkably cool and precise. The tannin is delicate and silky, far removed from the rustic force that Monastrell can sometimes display. The wine flows with great drinkability, without losing substance or seriousness. A rare balance of fullness and freshness.
Finish
Long, spicy and characterised by persistent dark berry fruit. A wine that lingers – with warmth, but without heaviness.
Terroir & Origin
The DO Alicante in south-eastern Spain is the realm of Monastrell – a grape variety that loves Mediterranean heat and can produce wines of impressive concentration. El Sequé demonstrates that this region has far more to offer than mere opulence.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Dominated by Monastrell (Mourvèdre), complemented by a cuvée component of Syrah. The combination lends the wine structural depth and aromatic complexity. The ageing emphasises freshness and fruit without denying its Mediterranean origins.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Excellent with braised lamb shoulder with chestnuts and Romanesco. But also surprisingly powerful with vegetarian dishes: tomato bake with aubergine, Brazil nuts and basil or an elegant beetroot carpaccio with rocket, goat’s cheese and walnuts.
Special Features
El Sequé 2019 is a wine that defies conventional expectations. 14.5% alcohol, and yet no heavyweight – rather a vibrant, characterful Mediterranean red with genuine distinctiveness.
