Wine

Peyre Rose, Clos de Cistes, 2006

Wine information

The Clos de Cistes is a Syrah with a small amount of Grenache, aged for almost ten years in large wooden barrels and cement tanks.

Color

dark purple with violet reflections

Nose

At first, you might flinch a little when you have the wine in the glass, so spicy and dense it presents itself on the nose. Marlène Soria, the winemaker, has given the Clos de Cistes so much time that now, after years of aging, it also needs a little time to find itself. It does this best in the carafe. Then the Syrah opens up, smelling of the blackest of black berries, of farming and meat stock, of Brettanomyces in the form of Belgian Lambic beers, and of earth. Is that unusual? Yes, indeed.

Palate

But the extraordinary is program here. It does not change on the palate, but rather condenses. The fruit is dark, mysterious and lively. The Clos de Cistes has a lot of tannin and brings the tannins unadulterated but ripe on the tongue. In the first moment, the wine seems almost wild and uncouth, like a horse that has been standing in the stable too long and is irrepressibly happy to get back to the pasture. After a few jumps, it calms down and turns towards you. The Clos de Cistes becomes rounder, more harmonious, punchier and offers more and more dimensions of fruit (blackcurrant, cassis liqueur, blackberry, blueberry, plum), of meatiness, of spices and dried herbs. Great!
