Wine Description for Riesling Jungfer Grosses Gewächs 2023 1500ml Magnum by Peter Jakob Kühn
- Colour & Appearance
- Bright pale straw yellow with fine, greenish-tinged reflections – a visual promise of freshness and precision.
- Nose
- This Riesling redefines crystalline clarity. Reductive, cool and transparent like a mountain stream, it showcases the grape variety in its purest form. Stony-slate minerality dominates the aromatic profile, whilst fruit emerges only in flashes: lime zest, lemon peel, a hint of kaffir lime and white peach. Impressive is the herbal intensity: lemon balm, chervil, lemongrass and coriander develop into fennel seed and create a slightly aniseed, dark-mineral tension. Despite this depth, the wine remains refreshingly approachable.
- Palate
- Here the precision intensifies further. A razor-sharp, linear acidity (7.6 g/l) cuts across the palate with surgical precision. The distinctive, appley note recalls biting into apple skins – red and yellow – and bundles tannins, phenols, acidity and fruit in an impressive manner. The minerality feels pronounced, bright and energised, allowing the wine to blossom in almost weightless structures despite its intensity. With just 3.6 g/l residual sugar, perfectly dry.
- Finish
- Long, herbaceous and vibrant. The energy and inner tension dominate and leave a lingering, mineral impression of remarkable persistence.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site Jungfer lies at 200 metres elevation east of Hallgarten with a 12% slope and south-east exposure. Calcareous terrace sediments, interspersed with phylite slate and quartz, define the character. The high day-night temperature fluctuations create that vibrant tension which distinguishes the wine.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Whole bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, maturation over 16 months on full lees in traditional wooden cask. This classic Rheingau method at Kühn combines biodynamic philosophy with artisanal precision.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Scallops with fennel cream, monkfish in herb butter, pike-perch with lemongrass, oysters, goat’s cheese of medium maturity or asparagus with Hollandaise sauce. The acidity structure also pairs well with pan-fried calf’s sweetbreads or Vitello Tonnato.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle promises optimal development. A Grosses Gewächs that bears Kühn’s biodynamic signature – uncompromising, precise and with decades of ageing potential. Fascinating now, but will become even more complex over the next 5-15 years.
