Wine Description for Riesling Berg Schlossberg Grosses Gewächs 2023 by Peter Jakob Kühn
- Colour & Appearance
- Shimmering greenish-yellow with bright, distinctly greenish-tinged reflections – a visual promise of freshness and precision.
- Nose
- A monument to restraint: the nose reveals pure stone, a foundation of quartzite and phyllite that doesn’t impose itself but commands with quiet authority. Above this hovers a juicy, almost melting fruit – mirabelle plum, vineyard peach, freshly cut Conference pear. None of it is opulent; everything is precise and purposeful for the wine’s balance. A hint of cold smoke lends atmospheric depth, whilst subtle herbal notes of mint, chervil and lemon balm underscore clarity and freshness.
- Palate
- Racy and yet perfectly composed – this Riesling is energy without noise. The inner tension is impressive: vital, vibrant, finely structured. The 7.6 g/l acidity meets 4.5 g/l residual sugar in a balance that feels not like compromise but like enhancement. The wine shows Riesling in its purest form – clarity, structure, drive. It is quiet in character, almost modest, yet suffused with enormous power. What fascinates: its perspective. Already accessible and vibrant in youth, it carries within it a composure that promises decades of ageing.
- Finish
- Long, threaded through with minerality, with a lingering echo of stone and herbs. The wine lingers without exhausting itself – a sign of inner substance and self-assurance.
- Terroir & Origin
- Peter Jakob Kühn’s parcel lies in the legendary Berg Schlossberg west of Rüdesheim – slopes of up to 65% gradient, south-facing exposure, 160 metres altitude. Forty-year-old vines are rooted in a mixture of quartzite, phyllite slate and loess loam, one of Germany’s most storied and awe-inspiring vineyard sites.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Riesling. Whole-bunch pressing, gentle and slow. Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, aged for 16 months on full lees in large wooden cask. A vinification that promotes both clarity and depth.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Pike-perch fillet with herb foam, pan-fried scallops, calf’s sweetbread with morels, asparagus with hollandaise sauce, aged Comté or goat’s cheese with honey.
- Special Features
- The first vintage in which Peter Jakob Kühn produces Berg Schlossberg as a Grosses Gewächs – a historic moment. The winery’s signature blends so clearly with the site’s character that something new and distinctive emerges. A wine with enormous ageing potential.
