Wine Description for Drei Dörfer Chardonnay 2023 by Franz Keller

Colour & Appearance
Deep golden yellow with a slight haze – a sign that this Chardonnay has been bottled unfiltered and retains its full substance.
Nose
Impressively complex: initially dominated by smoky roasted notes, tobacco and the aroma of a cigar box – aromas that bear witness to careful barrel ageing. With air contact, an elegant fruit palette unfolds of apricots, lemon zest and quince jelly. The intensity is remarkable, yet never intrusive – a textbook example of controlled power.
Palate
Dense, structured and carried by vibrant freshness. Citrus fruits and yellow stone fruits characterise the opening, whilst a precise acidity lends the wine tension. Particularly noteworthy is the fine tannin, which gives this Chardonnay unusual depth and texture – almost Burgundian in its complexity. The umami component is pronounced and makes the wine an ideal food companion.
Finish
Long, mineral and with sustained freshness. The roasted notes return, carried by a saline minerality that recalls the volcanic soils.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come predominantly from the vineyard sites of the Grandes Gewächse in three Baden villages. The volcanic weathered soils lend the wine its characteristic minerality and complexity – pure terroir from one of Germany’s most exciting Chardonnay regions.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Chardonnay, aged for 12 months in barrique, followed by 6 months in stainless steel on fine lees. This combination unites the creamy texture of barrel ageing with the freshness of stainless steel maturation.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This wine demands sophisticated cuisine: scallops with butter sauce, pan-fried turbot, calf’s sweetbreads, mushroom risotto or mature Comté cheese. The umami notes harmonise perfectly with miso-glazed fish or truffle-infused dishes.
Special Characteristics
A meditative wine that deserves time and attention. Franz Keller impressively demonstrates that German Chardonnay can play at world-class level.
