Tasting note from from 01.06.2020, Copyright Peter Müller

In the Cru "Piaggione", an east-southeast facing vineyard with skeleton-rich limestone soils at 420 to 450 meters above sea level, there is a clone-mixed vineyard with early ripening grapes on 1.2 hectares. The wines show restrained power, lots of fruit and great ripening potential.

Color

The wine shows a slightly translucent ruby red with garnet rim clear and shiny in the glass.

Nose

In contrast to its colour, the nose of the wine is dark, toasty and earthy. Powerful aromas of plum jam and elderberries are complemented by notes of molasses and cocoa shell as well as muscovado sugar and barley malt. These are joined by slightly peaty and smoky notes of freshly baked brown bread, pumpernickel and roasted chestnuts. Thankfully, no sign of the Tuscan jam pot.

Palate

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino "Piaggione" from Salicutti is straightforward and origin-related on the palate and also does without artificial extract sweetness. Instead, he replaces it with tart sincerity. Red berry fruit is refreshed on the palate many times more than the wine's aroma initially suggests. Juicy, thanks to fine-grained tannin and invigorating acidity, this wine inevitably makes clear how unimportant written down data of alcohol content are when a wine simply feels coherent in itself.
