Wine Description for Birkweiler Riesling vom Rotliegenden 2022 by Ökonomierat Rebholz

Colour & Appearance
Sparkling golden yellow in the glass – luminous and inviting, exactly as one expects from a young Palatinate Riesling.
Nose
Here the full class of the 2022 vintage reveals itself: ripe apple fruit and quince compote meet a vibrant bouquet of citrus fruitsorange, lime and grapefruit alternate. Beneath lies a fascinating mineral layer with white pepper, stony notes and subtle smoky hints, which lend the wine remarkable depth.
Palate
Juicy and precise at once. The playful acidity carries the fruit effortlessly, whilst a saline character gives the wine tension and drinkability. At a moderate 11.5% alcohol, the Riesling remains elegant and never heavy – a textbook example of balance and finesse.
Finish
Persistent and mineral, with that saline aftertaste that invites the next sip. The fruit notes linger long without ever becoming obtrusive.
Terroir & Origin
The Rotliegende – a geological formation of red sandstone – characterises the wines from Birkweiler with their distinctive minerality and spice. Rebholz masterfully understands how to capture this terroir in the bottle.
Grape Variety & Vinification
24 hours of skin contact extract additional aromas and structure before the must is pre-clarified through natural sedimentation. Ageing takes place in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity and freshness of the Riesling. A note: the wine benefits from decanting and shows impressive presence even after several days.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion: butternut squash soup with macadamia crunch, potato and smoked pork salad in mustard dressing or sea bass in ham crust with basil gnocchi. The wine certainly handles spicy and intense flavours – its acidity structure and minerality stand up to them.
Special Features
A benchmark Riesling with excellent ageing potential. Ökonomierat Rebholz belongs to the absolute elite of German Riesling producers, and this wine impressively demonstrates why.
