Siccagno is made from 100% Nero d'Avola, the grape that connects Sicily from east to west. The vines grow at 280 metres above sea level on medium-textured red sand and sub-Appennine limestone soils and are cultivated according to organic principles. The vines are planted in Albarello, the Sicilian single-vine training system with a planting density of over 6000 vines per hectare. Harvested from fully ripe grapes, the wine is left on the skins for a good 30 days before being fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and then matured for 22 months in 25 hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels. Before delivery, the wine matures for a further two months in the winery on the bottle.
Color
Purple red with violet reflections.
Nose
The 2021 Siccagno Nero d'Avola from Arianna Occhipinti has an expansive and generous aroma of dark berries, blackberries and mulberries, black cherries and dried plums. There are also dark flavours of forest floor, olive tapenade, espresso crema and meat extract. Distinctive flavours in constant flux.
Mouth
The expansive richness of the nose is bundled together on the palate by the grippy minerality and ripe, polished acidity, like a magnifying glass focussing the sun's rays. The essence of the Nero d'Avola is brought into the glass with pinpoint accuracy, without indulging in baroque arias of richness. In wine, as in music, learn to play one note before you play the second. And don't play it for no reason.
