Wine Description for Blaufränkisch Burgenland 2022 by Moric

Character
Roland Velich, the man behind Moric, has dedicated himself to an authentic interpretation of Blaufränkisch. This entry-level wine from Burgenland demonstrates with moderate 13% alcohol precisely that elegance and drinkability that characterises Velich’s philosophy. Rather than opulence, the focus here is on purity of fruit – a Blaufränkisch that lets the grape variety speak, not the cellar.
Terroir & Origin
Burgenland, particularly the area around Lake Neusiedl, offers ideal conditions for Blaufränkisch. The Pannonian climate zone with hot summers and cool nights creates that tension between ripeness and freshness that this grape variety requires. Moric works with grapes from various vineyard sites, often from old vines on calcareous and slate-rich soils that impart structure and minerality. The 2022 vintage benefited from a warm, though not extreme, growing season.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Blaufränkisch (known as Lemberger in Germany) is regarded as Austria’s most significant indigenous red wine variety. Velich vinifies with purism: spontaneous fermentation, restrained use of oak, no technological tricks. The result is wines with characteristic cherry fruit, spicy notes and a vibrant acidity structure. The tannins remain fine-grained, the wine accessible, without losing depth. Moric deliberately avoids over-extraction – here finesse counts rather than power.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A versatile companion to Central European cuisine: perfect with boiled beef, Wiener Schnitzel or roasted poultry. The vibrant acidity harmonises beautifully with braised beef or game dishes. Also an excellent choice with aged cheeses and mushroom dishes. The moderate alcohol level makes it an ideal food wine that doesn’t dominate but complements.
