Wine description for Marsannay rouge AOC 2022 by Bruno Clair

Character
Bruno Clair is among the most respected producers in northern Burgundy, and his Marsannay rouge embodies the philosophy of the house: precision, finesse and terroir expression without exaggeration. The 2022 vintage displays the typical elegance of a cooler Burgundy year with vibrant acidity and clear fruit definition. This is not a wine that seeks to impress through power, but rather through balance and drinkability – a Marsannay that presents the often underestimated appellation in its finest light.
Terroir & Origin
Marsannay forms the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits and was only elevated to its own AOC in 1987. The Domaine Bruno Clair manages several parcels here on calcareous clay soils, which lend Pinot Noir structure and minerality. The location between Dijon and the Grand Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin produces wines that are more approachable and fruit-driven than their famous southern neighbours, yet by no means trivial. The continental climate with cool nights ensures aromatic freshness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir in its Burgundian purity: Bruno Clair works with traditional methods, natural fermentation and a moderate proportion of new oak, which never dominates the fruit. The domaine is renowned for its careful selection and an ageing process that places the origin front and centre. The wine is typically destemmed and undergoes gentle extraction, resulting in wines with silky tannins and medium body. At 13% alcohol, the wine remains light-footed and European in the finest sense.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Marsannay is a versatile food companion: classically with Coq au Vin, Bœuf Bourguignon or duck breast. It also harmonises beautifully with grilled salmon, mushroom dishes or a ripe Époisses. The vibrant acidity structure makes it an excellent partner for root vegetables and autumnal terrines.
