The Tenuta di Castellaro is located on a plateau on Lipari, the largest Aeolian island north of Sicily. The temperate, windy climate and the influence of the sea characterise the microclimate of the Piana di Castellaro, which benefits from the strong temperature amplitudes between day and night. The volcanic soils are rich in minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, iron, magnesium and calcium, giving the wines their particular texture, structure and longevity.

With an unobstructed view of the neighbouring island of Vulcano, there are about 3,000 vines on terraced plots facing south-east, from which 500 litres of sweet wine are produced. The winery has made special wooden crates for this purpose, which are used to dry the grapes after the harvest. The baskets are set up on a steel construction directly on the cliff and are turned every two days and covered with tarpaulins overnight. The grapes dry in the sun until they are reduced to 13 % of their harvest weight. The sweet wine was first produced in 2014.

Color

Strong amber with orange reflections.

Nose

The 2018 Malvasia delle Lipari from Tenuta di Castellaro fires rich cascades of yellow stone fruit from the goblet. Apricots, peaches, fully ripe cantaloupe melon and cactus fruit fill its fruit basket, the spaces in between filled with dried fruit, dried apricots, pears and figs as well as honeycomb and roasted hazelnuts. His nature is always fresh, juicy and plump with clear direction - into the glasses!

Mouth

Also on the palate, it is fresh and fruity, more like a V.S.O.P. apricot nectar than a wine made from roasted grapes. Tense and squeaky-clean, the wide-ranging acidity provides vibration and rapid drinking flow, the fruits of the nose also string together on the palate like a string of pearls. Pleasantly fresh fruit enjoyment from Italy's hot south!
