Wine description for Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd dry 2019 by Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Intense golden yellow with delicate silvery reflections at the rim – a wine that announces its maturity and concentration visually.
Nose
A complex, multi-layered bouquet that demands patience. After adequate aeration, ripe mirabelle plums, apricots and oranges unfold, underpinned by a fascinating honey spice and malty notes. These are joined by cedarwood and an entire herb bouquet: nettle, thyme and rosemary. Definitely decant!
Palate
Powerful and dense – this Smaragd displays the full force of the Wachau. The succulent yellow stone fruit is carried by a peppery, distinctive spice that lends the wine structure and tension. Despite all its opulence, it retains freshness and energy. A Grüner Veltliner at the beginning of its development, which will gain considerably in the coming years.
Finish
Long, spicy and persistent with herbal persistence and mineral precision.
Terroir & Origin
From the legendary single vineyard site Weingebirge in the Wachau, where Saint Severin lingered over 1,500 years ago. The soils of loam, loess and paragneis lend the wine its characteristic minerality and depth – typical of the finest vineyard sites in this unique wine region.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Classic Grüner Veltliner in Smaragd quality. The wine is aged for two and a half years in large, old wooden casks – a traditional method that gives the wine time to develop without dominating it with wood aromas. Bottling takes place on a fruit day according to the biodynamic calendar, as has been tradition at Nikolaihof for generations.
Food Recommendations
This powerful Smaragd calls for hearty, spicy cuisine: black chicken with morels and green asparagus, blood sausage with seaweed chutney, oranges and thyme or vegetarian roasted heritage carrot with hazelnuts and maple syrup.
Special Features
An excellent cellar wine from Austria’s oldest biodynamic winery. Patience will be rewarded – this 2019 has at least a decade of development potential ahead of it.
