Wine Description for Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Dry 2011 1500ml Magnum by Nikolaihof
- Colour & Appearance
- Brilliant dandelion yellow with golden reflections – the colour immediately reveals the noble maturity of this Smaragd, now over a decade old.
- Nose
- An aromatic profile of impressive complexity: ripe Boskop apple, succulent Williams pears and quinces dominate the fruit palette. These are joined by fascinating spice notes of nutmeg, dried oregano and marjoram. Surprising and characteristic: a fine, slightly smoky note reminiscent of oxtail – a sign of biodynamic viticulture and noble maturity.
- Palate
- On the palate, the wine presents itself as malty and seemingly sweet, despite dry vinification. The subtle acidity plays elegantly in the background, yet is enveloped by aromatic richness. The result: a voluminous, concentrated body with remarkable density. The texture is round and vinous in the best sense – a wine that carries its twelve years with dignity.
- Finish
- The aftertaste is persistently spicy and remains present until the last drop. The concentration and complexity continue seamlessly – a marathon finish that impressively demonstrates the magnum bottle’s maturation.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site Im Weingebirge is a parcel within the legendary Alte Point cru, situated above Mautern. Six hectares between 206 and 225 metres elevation, characterised by paragneiss in the subsoil and loess-loam at the surface – ideal conditions for mineral, age-worthy Grüner Veltliner.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Grüner Veltliner in Smaragd quality from biodynamically managed Nikolaihof. At 12.5% alcohol, unusually moderate for the category, which underscores the elegance and drinkability.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- The spicy complexity calls for hearty dishes: braised calf’s sweetbreads, Wiener Tafelspitz with apple horseradish, pan-fried turbot with herb butter or aged alpine cheese. Also a compelling pairing with smoked fish.
- Special Features
- Archive Release 2024 – a rare time capsule from Nikolaihof’s cellar. The magnum bottle has allowed the wine ideal, slow maturation. A wine for connoisseurs, proving that great Grüner Veltliner can endure for decades.
