The top quality Gewurztraminer is the protagonist at Clos-Saint-Urbain, although it only grows on a modest 0.5 hectares, resulting in an exclusive production of about 1500 bottles per year. The Rangen finds itself in this paradigm and does not let itself be dominated by the strongly aromatic Gewurztraminer. On the contrary, it helps shape an impressive dry wine style.
With its claim to fermentation strength, the Gewurztraminer Rangen stands out every year. On the south-facing steep slopes of the Rangen, at the end of a valley characterised by cold and at an unusual altitude for an Alsatian vineyard, the Gewurztraminer takes a modest back seat. The Thur River, which flows straight down these slopes, moderates the climate, making it possible to plant this grape variety close to the river. In 2019, the harvest achieved a late date compared to many other Gewurztraminers, but fermentation was quick and resulted in an almost dry product.

The 2019 Gewurztraminer Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann reveals itself with extraordinary aromatic freshness, notes of orange pulp, peach, pear and grapefruit, mixed with floral nuances, matchstick aromas, fine light tobacco and refreshing citrus ginger. A fine pepper note rounds off the whole. The vitality of its vintage is vividly presented in this impressive Gewurztraminer.
The tongue enjoys the same delicacy and elegance; a lively acidity plays with a dense, multifactorial minerality. The juicy fruit aromas, especially orange, combine perfectly with the fine tannin structure, and the wine's vitality comes into its own. Despite the higher alcohol content on the label, the delicacy, lightness and silkiness of this wine is unsurpassed. For this creation, like many Humbrecht wines of the 2019 vintage, the watchword is buy and store. Think of it as a celebration of joy ahead! If you can't wait, decant it a day or two beforehand and serve it from large Burgundy glasses.
