Wine Description for Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2019 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Colour & Appearance
Radiant golden yellow with delicate green reflections – a wine that already hints at its limestone soil origins in the glass.
Nose
Initially restrained and refined, revealing a fascinating interplay of aromas after aeration: peach, nectarine and quince meet delicate floral notes. Interwoven are anise and ginger, whilst the minerality typical of limestone soils – almost like oyster shells – lends the bouquet a cool, maritime dimension.
Palate
Elegant and creamy in texture, yet threaded through with a fine saline note that harmonises perfectly with the vibrant acidity. The fruit is present but never obtrusive – rather embedded within a mineral framework that guarantees freshness and tension. A wine of substance that, despite its near-dry character (the residual sugar is barely perceptible), never feels heavy.
Finish
Long and refreshing, with a lingering echo of citrus and ginger that enlivens the palate and calls for the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
An assemblage from the limestone vineyard sites of the estate: Clos Windsbuhl, Clos Jebsal and Heimbourg. These vineyards, which normally yield their own Grand Crus, produced wines in 2019 that did not finish completely dry. Olivier Humbrecht decided upon a shared cuvée – the result is a wine that carries the limestone signature of these legendary sites.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Pinot Gris, fermented separately and subsequently blended. Six months on the lees impart additional complexity and creamy texture – a technique that Zind-Humbrecht also employs for its Grand Crus.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile food companion: scallops with honey-grapefruit marinade, pumpkin gnocchi with thyme or corn-fed chicken breast with kumquat. Generally, it harmonises beautifully with dishes featuring fresh, citric or subtly sweet components. Do decant and serve in large Burgundy glasses.
Special Features
A wine that showcases the accessible side of Zind-Humbrecht – Grand Cru quality at a fairer price point. Blessed with excellent ageing potential for the years to come.
