In the heart of Sicily, a good 65km southwest of Palermo, the winery is located in the free communal consortium of Trapani. The family business was founded as early as 1958 by Vito's grandfather, but was abandoned in 1993 due to economic difficulties. Vito Lauria, who is deeply rooted in his homeland, then harboured the desire to revive the winery and to carry his family's vinophile heritage into the future. Familiar with his grandfather's working methods from an early age, he decided to study viticulture and oenology.
Costabisaccia is a 30-year-old, north-facing vineyard in the hills around Grisì, about 25 kilometres southeast of Alcamo. There, the autochthonous Catarratto grows at 600 metres above sea level and always produces storable wines with clear varietal typicity. Harvested in mid-September, the yield of this vigorous variety averages seven tonnes per hectare. The grapes are pressed and macerate on the skins for 24 hours under temperature control. Fermented spontaneously in steel tanks, the wine matures on its lees for six months before being put on sale.
Color
Strong straw yellow, radiant and clear.
Nose
The 2022 Costabisaccia from VinoLauria is a one hundred percent Catarratto and shows its fruity side this year Ripe yellow stone fruit such as peaches and apricots along with yellow-fleshed melons open on the nose, followed by herbaceous aromas of sage, laurel, linseed and wild camomile. With increasing aeration, this bouquet of aromas blossoms, suggesting the choice of a suitably large glass.
Mouth
On the palate, the fruit shines in the golden evening sun with an old gold shimmer. The fruity aromas of the nose are also perfectly balanced on the palate. The fruit is dry as a bone, mainly in the extract, tartly counteracted by notes of camomile and sage, topped by fragile floral notes of orange blossom. The ripe acidity curates the joyful round dance and carries it into the animatingly tart finish.
