Wine Description for Weinstock Alte Reben 2020 by Tement

Colour & Appearance
Pale straw yellow with lively green reflections – a wine that signals its youthful energy and freshness right from the glass.
Nose
Here the Welschriesling reveals its demanding side: initially closed, it opens with patience and air to reveal a fascinating aromatic profile. Apple skins, pome fruit and orchard fruit meet nut shells and a tart herbal spice of hop shoots and pea pods. The aromatics feel sketched with a sharp pencil – precise, yet not fully unfolded. A wine that demands time and rewards it.
Palate
On the palate, Weinstock reveals its full power: a taut, sinewy structure meets juicy fruit and creates an electrifying tension. Citrus, salt and iodine dominate the opening, followed by white nectarine, white currants and once again apple skins. The pulsating acidity fairly whips across the palate – here nothing is comforting, everything is energy and vibration. A slightly tart astringency and mineral salinity provide additional complexity.
Finish
Long, saline and of impressive precision. The wine lingers with mineral freshness and a tension that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The Riede Zieregg in South Styria, more precisely the parcel Steinbruch, provides the foundation for this extraordinary wine. Vines averaging 40 years old are rooted in coral limestone with brown earth overlay at 430-460 metres elevation. The southern exposure and extreme slope gradient of 40-50% shape concentration and minerality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Welschriesling from hand-harvesting, spontaneously fermented and aged for 24 months in used barrels on fine lees. Unfined and unfiltered bottling – an uncompromising approach that gives the wine considerable ageing potential.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Croquettes with soft-shell crab meat, poussin with artichoke and preserved lemon or tacos with cauliflower wings and cucumber-pineapple salsa – the wine demands dishes with substance and spice.
Special Characteristics
This is no easy-drinking terrace wine, but a serious, age-worthy Welschriesling that impressively demonstrates the underestimated potential of this grape variety. A wine for the patient.
