Wine Description for Volnay 1er Cru „Carelle sous la Chapelle“ AOC 2021 by Jean-Marc & Thomas Bouley

Character
Domaine Bouley manages one of Volnay’s finest vineyard sites with Carelle sous la Chapelle – a Premier Cru that embodies the characteristic elegance and finesse of this Burgundian appellation. The 2021 vintage benefits from a cooler growing cycle, which imparts to the Pinot Noir that precision and freshness that distinguishes Volnay from the more powerful neighbouring communes. Jean-Marc and Thomas Bouley continue the family tradition with respect for the terroir, producing wines of subtle complexity and Burgundian authenticity.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Carelle sous la Chapelle lies on the mid-slope of Volnay on calcareous clay soils that impart a particular mineral depth to the Pinot Noir. The proximity to the historic chapel gives the parcel its name. Volnay itself is regarded as one of the most feminine appellations of the Côte de Beaune – less powerful than Pommard, yet possessed of an intoxicating fragrance and silky texture. The continental climate with cool autumn nights in 2021 enabled a slow, physiologically complete ripening at moderate alcohol levels.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The Pinot Noir displays its full Burgundian finesse here: in Volnay, floral notes, red berry fruit and a characteristic spiciness dominate. The Bouleys work traditionally with extended maceration and ageing in French oak barrels, with the proportion of new wood carefully measured to avoid overwhelming the terroir expression. The moderate alcohol content of 13.5% and the dry style underscore the commitment to drinkability and elegance rather than opulence.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Volnay harmonises beautifully with Coq au Vin, duck breast with cherry sauce or grilled tuna. Burgundian cuisine offers ideal partners: Bœuf Bourguignon, Charolais beef or Époisses cheese. The wine also unfolds its delicate structure optimally with mushroom dishes, calf’s sweetbreads or rare roasted lamb.
