Attention wine lovers. Here we have a particularly attractive Syrah, born from the single vineyard Saint-Jean, high up on 350 metres of the north side of the impressive Mont Ventoux. The vines draw their strength from a soil rich in stones and clay of the third Oligocene age.
The hand-picked grapes, to 90% without stems, were fermented in concrete vats for twelve days in early September 2020. This was followed by ageing for eleven months in stainless steel vats and then nine months of bottle ageing. A total of 2,037 bottles of this growth were produced.
The visual presentation of the wine is an attraction in itself - a slightly translucent purple with brightening edges.
The smell that greets your nose is slightly reductive at first, with hints of smoke, peat, raw meat and undergrowth. But patience pays off as it becomes a fruitier explosion of boysenberries, blackberries and plums over time. Notwithstanding the ripe fruitiness, the Syrah retains a cool, firm and crisp feel.
When tasted on the tongue, the young wine is challenging at first before revealing its charming side - determined on the one hand by the firmness, which, however, opens up over time through decanting. Despite its youth, the tannin is ripe and juicy, and the fruit, influenced by the cooler sites high up, presents itself as juicy, firm and crisp.
Charming, however, is the sweet extract and ripe fruit core, accompanied by a present yet silky acidity and a touch of yeast, all interwoven with the fruit. This Syrah is truly a jewel in the making, with great potential to be glimpsed into the future.
If you are wondering what food would go best with this wine, we suggest a beef steak with lemon thyme butter and roasted vegetables. The robust aroma of the Syrah would be excellent with grilled swordfish steaks with rosemary, lavender and fennel seeds. Alternatively, a tender roast pork with a caper and olive sauce could be a harmonious combination.
