Wine Description for Rubatsch DOC 2022 by Manincor
- Colour & Appearance
- Intense purplish-red with violet reflections and an opaque, almost black core – the Lagrein grape displays its full chromatic splendour here.
- Nose
- Expressive and precise: black cherries, mulberries and raspberries dominate, accompanied by elderflower and pomegranate. Beneath lies a fascinating spicy layer of black walnuts, hollyhocks and allspice, with hints of espresso crema. The fruit strikes a remarkably fresh and cool note – Alpine terroir in a glass.
- Palate
- Here the character of the Lagrein grape reveals itself in pure form: the attack is stimulatingly bitter with grainy, pronounced tannins. Medium body with an airy structure, the tannins are gripping yet not aggressive. Noble dark chocolate and ripe, well-integrated acidity that glows from behind. A wine with edges and character – and that is precisely what makes it compelling.
- Finish
- Juicy and mellow with persistent tannin structure and a bitter-spicy aftertaste. The dark fruit remains present, the length is remarkable for a wine with just 12.5% alcohol.
- Terroir & Origin
- An intelligent blend from two vineyard sites: two-thirds from Rubatsch in Terlan (sandy porphyry soil, 250m) bring finesse and elegance, one-third from Seehof in Kaltern (loamy limestone gravel) contributes power and structure. This combination yields a Lagrein with depth and drinkability.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Lagrein, spontaneously fermented in wooden vats with a two-week maceration period. 16 months ageing in barrique (20% new oak), bottled unfiltered. A craftsman-like, clean vinification that respects the grape variety.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A wine for refined cuisine: venison loin with lingonberries, braised ox cheeks, wild game ragout or aged mountain cheese. The tannin structure calls for protein and fat – beef steaks or lamb racks are ideal partners.
- Special Characteristics
- At 12.5% alcohol, refreshingly moderate – a countertrend to the concentration obsession of some South Tyrolean producers. A „red wine for the connoisseur“, as the tasting note aptly puts it: characterful, tannin-driven, not crowd-pleasing. Manincor proves that great Lagrein wines need not be over-extracted.
