Wine Description for Rubatsch DOC 2020 1500ml Magnum by Manincor
- Colour & Appearance
- An impressive dense violet-red, appearing almost black at its core – typical of the Lagrein grape in its full expression. Only minimal lightening towards the rim reveals the youthfulness of this 2020.
- Nose
- Intense and multi-layered: blackberries and elderberries dominate initially, accompanied by sour cherries and a hint of vanilla. Behind this unfolds a fascinating herbal interplay of rosemary, thyme and ivy. Particularly appealing are the peaty notes and hints of fine dark chocolate, which lend the wine depth and complexity.
- Palate
- Here the Rubatsch reveals its most seductive side: fresh, youthful tannins combine harmoniously with dark, juicy fruit. The saline minerality – a gift of the porphyry weathered rock – lends the wine tension and drinkability. Spicy notes and the present, yet never dominant structure make it already accessible now, whilst also promising good ageing potential.
- Finish
- Long and spicy with lingering dark fruit and fine herbal spice. The tannins remain present, but refined.
- Terroir & Origin
- An intelligent blend from two complementary vineyard sites: Two-thirds come from Rubatsch in Terlan (250 m, south-west facing slope, sandy porphyry soil), which provide finesse and elegance. One-third comes from Seehof in Kaltern (loamy calcareous gravel), which contributes power and structure. This combination creates the wine’s complexity.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Lagrein, the autochthonous South Tyrolean grape variety par excellence. Mash fermentation in wooden vats with spontaneous fermentation by indigenous yeasts. Two weeks‘ maceration with careful extraction, followed by 16 months‘ ageing in barriques (only 20% new wood) – a maturation that lends the wine complexity without over-oaking it.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- A versatile companion to braised veal cheeks with pumpkin and polenta, beef tagliata with balsamic vinegar or surprisingly good with beetroot risotto with walnuts and thyme. Generally perfect with intense meat and braised dishes.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle (1500ml) promises not only distinctive visual appeal, but also slower, more harmonious maturation of the wine.
