  • The unadorned younger sister of the Brunello: same vineyard parcels, same yeasts, but 13% alcohol by volume and only around 13 months in large oak. Eric Guido (Vinous) frames the 2024 as „elegant, energetic“ – the bright, nervous counterpoint to the more concentrated 2023.
  • 🎨 Colour: Pale, clear ruby with violet-blue reflections – youth at first glance
  • 👃 Aroma: Wild cherry and blackcurrant before violets, blue flowers and flower soil, behind it a fine smoky whisper and crushed limestone
  • 👅 Palate: Juicy, taut, almost nervous – red berry fruit upfront, finishing with salinity and a grippy yet short tannin structure
  • 🎭 Character: No barrique make-up, no opulence. A drinkable counterpoint to the Brunello – fresh, lively, open
  • 🍽️ Food pairing: Tagliatelle al ragù toscano, Coniglio alle olive, Focaccia with anchovies and burrata, aged Pecorino
  • ✨ Special features: Same seven hectares of Sangiovese as the Brunello, only from younger vines; organic since 2005; optimal now until around 2028

Wine Description for Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2024 from Le Chiuse

Character
The 2024 Rosso is the quick, nervous variant of the Le Chiuse style. Eric Guido coined the defining distinction in his Vinous vintage report (March 2026): „the elegant, energetic 2024s“ stand as a brighter, more mobile counterpoint to the more concentrated 2023. 13 per cent alcohol by volume instead of the usual 14 – here the Magnelis harvest early and aim for drinkability, not ageing potential.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from the same seven hectares of Sangiovese on the north-eastern flank of Montosoli, from which the Brunello is also made – only from the younger vines. Altitude between 300 and 500 metres, the soil comprises galestro slate, calcareous marl, clay and volcanic tuff. Organic farming for over two decades. The north-facing slope, not the warmer south, is the source of the floral, herbal-spicy signature – and the precise acidity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100 per cent Sangiovese Grosso from the historic mass selection of the BS 11 clone. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, approximately 13 months ageing in large Slavonian oak casks – the same botti as for the Brunello, only considerably shorter. No barrique, no roasted notes, no cosmetics. The result: the floral, earthy signature of the house without the three-year maturation work of the grand bottles.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Ideal with medium-weight Italian cuisine: Tagliatelle al ragù toscano, Coniglio alle olive (rabbit in white wine with Taggiasca olives), Gnocchi with sage and butter, Ribollita or Focaccia with anchovies and burrata. With cheese Pecorino stagionato or a young Caciotta al tartufo. Serve at 15–16 degrees, 15 minutes decanting is sufficient – this wine needs no grand unveiling.
