Wine Description for Riesling Marienburg Grosses Gewächs „Falkenlay“ 2021 by Clemens Busch

Colour & Appearance

Luminous straw yellow with golden and green reflections – a visual foretaste of the complexity to follow.

Nose

An herb garden in liquid form: lemon balm, sage and parsley dominate the first impression, followed by lemon thyme, coriander and peppermint. With air contact, lemongrass and earthy slate notes develop. The fruit – lime, white peach, unripe pear – remains subtle in the background. Wet stones and mineral spice underscore the provenance from the grey slate of the Falkenlay parcel.

Palate

Like a cold mountain stream, this Riesling flows across the tongue – taut, demanding and of impressive clarity. Clemens Busch’s characteristic phenolic structure lends it bite and grip. Here, fruit does not reign, but rather depth, length and mineral precision. A wine for adults, one that rewards concentration and reveals its complexity only to the attentive taster.

General Information

The Falkenlay parcel is considered the jewel of the Marienburg vineyard site. Protected from cold easterly winds, the vines benefit from optimal ripeness whilst gaining mineral character from the deep grey slate. At 12.5% alcohol, the wine displays elegance and precision – a prime example of the potential of dry Mosel Rieslings.

Food Pairing Recommendations

The mineral structure and herbal spice harmonise perfectly with sautéed turbot with white asparagus and hollandaise sauce. Equally recommended: saltimbocca of veal with kohlrabi or celery from the oven with parsley pesto and chopped walnuts.

Special Characteristics

With the 2021 vintage, Clemens Busch has set the bar exceptionally high for dry Mosel Rieslings. This Falkenlay perfectly embodies the terroir of the protected parcel – a wine that deserves patience and will develop over years. Outstanding in its uncompromising minerality and aromatic depth.
