Wine Description for Riesling Marienburg Grosses Gewächs 2024 by Clemens Busch
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale, delicate straw yellow with subtle green reflections – a wine that announces its cool precision visually from the outset.
- Nose
- The Marienburg reveals itself with an impressive aromatic depth that far exceeds what the village wines suggest. The bouquet is dominated by nutty notes: marzipan, cherry stones, peach stones and almond kernels merge with a fine mineral depth. The yellow fruit side presents itself compactly – peach and mirabelle – yet always threaded through with a mystical, elusive undertone between red and blue. Reductive hints of wet slate and cool stone lend the wine its characteristic Mosel minerality. Herbal spice plays a central role: nettles, marjoram, tarragon and parsley create a bitter, distinctive depth. The whole stands with high precision and concentration in the glass.
- Palate
- Here the true greatness of this wine reveals itself: The attack is gripping and clearly structured, almost drying through its phenolic texture and the perfectly integrated, yet outstanding acidity. This acidity forms the taut backbone, stimulates intense salivation and holds the bitter compounds in elegant balance. On the retro-palate, herbs dominate over fruit: balsamic spice, white pepper, clove, fennel seed, anise and pea shoots alternate. The slate profile – smoky, cool, dark – emerges again and again, recedes, makes way for other facets. This constant transformation lends the wine a fascinating dynamism. The texture remains gripping, slightly phenolic, stimulating – remarkably accessible for a young Grosses Gewächs.
- Finish
- Long, persistent and characterised by cool minerality. The herbal spice and slate character linger, whilst the acidity provides sustained freshness.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Marienburg is the home vineyard of the Busch family, situated directly opposite the winery on the other side of the Mosel. The vineyard site varies between south and south-east facing slopes and unites all three slate colours cultivated by Busch: red, blue and grey. This wine comes from the area below the monastery, where grey slate dominates – this gives it its cool, mystical character.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Riesling, traditionally made in the „Mosel style“. With 7.5 g/l residual sugar and 5.6 g/l acidity, the wine displays the classic balance of a dry Mosel Riesling – the residual sweetness is virtually imperceptible, perfectly integrated by the acidity structure.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- The gripping structure and herbal spice predestine this wine for pan-fried monkfish, scallops with fennel, calf’s sweetbreads or asparagus with morels. Also an excellent choice with aged goat’s cheese or Comté.
- Special Features
- An impressively multi-layered „small“ Grosses Gewächs in Clemens Busch’s portfolio – already accessible now, but with considerable ageing potential. The combination of precision, depth and drinkability is masterfully achieved.
