Wine Description for Riesling „Im Sonnenschein“ GG 2021 by Ökonomierat Rebholz

Colour & Appearance
Medium straw yellow with brilliant clarity – a classic appearance for a mature Palatinate Riesling.
Nose
This wine breaks with the cool restraint of many 2021s and presents itself surprisingly juicy and ripe. A floating sweetness of lemon crème and white flowers opens the bouquet, followed by pear, apple and exotic carambola. Beneath lies a fascinating layer of smoke and mint – an aromatic complexity that bears Rebholz’s signature.
Palate
On the palate, a remarkable transformation unfolds: the wine becomes more citric and cooler, with razor-sharp acidity and electrifying energy. The shell limestone shows its full power here – saline, mineral, positively vibrant. A fine creaminess balances the sinewy acidity, whilst a subtle yet present tannin lends the wine unusual structure and grip. This is no crowd-pleasing Riesling, but a wine with backbone and tension.
Finish
Long, saline-mineral with sustained freshness. The acidity carries far, the shell limestone resonates – a finale that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Im Sonnenschein in the Queich Valley is a rarity on the Haardt ridge: south-facing rather than east-facing, at 160 to 250 metres elevation with slopes up to 20%. The Triassic shell limestone fundamentally shapes this wine – you taste the chalk formation in every sip.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Classic Rebholz vinification: 24 hours of skin contact after destemming, natural sedimentation, fermentation in stainless steel, six months ageing on fine lees. Purist winemaking that gives terroir maximum expression.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Flambéed pike-perch with almond foam, salmon ceviche with lime sorbet or grilled courgettes with dukkah and labneh – the wine demands precise, aromatic dishes that echo its minerality and acidity.
Special Characteristics
A Großes Gewächs that combines power with finesse. At 12.5% alcohol, the wine maintains elegance and drinkability – a Riesling for connoisseurs that will reward patience.
