Wine Description for Kastanienbusch Riesling GG 2021 1500ml Magnum by Ökonomierat Rebholz

Colour & Appearance
Radiant lemon yellow in the glass, clear and brilliant – a Riesling that communicates its youth and freshness visually from the outset.
Nose
Immediately recognisable as Rebholz Kastanienbusch: A characteristic herbal fragrance dominates, underpinned by forest and meadow aromas along with a hint of forest honey. To this are added verbena and lemon balm, fresh apple skin, a trace of blackcurrant and subtle passion fruit notes, which elegantly expand the aromatic spectrum without becoming intrusive.
Palate
The opening is juicy, fresh and youthful. On a base of lemon curd, white flowers unfold, again verbena and lemon balm, along with pear and peach segments. Then something remarkable happens: the wine suddenly gains momentum, opens up and develops immense pressure on the palate. With air and warmth it becomes increasingly smoky and stony, vibrant and demanding, firm and gripping. True greatness reveals itself in the deceptive lightness that conceals impressive depth.
Finish
Long, mineral and precise – the Kastanienbusch lingers with stony elegance and sustained freshness.
Terroir & Origin
At 320 metres above sea level, the highest Grosses Gewächs vineyard site in the Palatinate, located west of Birkweiler. Rebholz’s original parcels in the valley basin are protected from cold winds from the Palatinate Forest. The steep vineyard (30-35% gradient) consists of iron-bearing Rotliegendes with loose granite, slate and melaphyre deposits – a terroir that gives this Riesling its mineral signature.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Riesling, fermented after destemming with 24-hour skin contact. Aged in stainless steel with six months on lees – a classical, terroir-focused approach that places origin centre stage.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Sea bass in a salt crust with rosemary and lemon sauce, pike with yellow carrots, pointed cabbage, anise and woodruff or risotto with spring leeks, Parmesan and puffed rice.
Special Features
The magnum bottle (1500ml) promises optimal ageing conditions for this wine, which has many years ahead of it and will only reveal its full complexity with time.
