Wine Description for Riesling Hallgarten Alte Reben 2020 by Peter Jakob Kühn

Character
Peter Jakob Kühn is counted among the biodynamic pioneers of the Rheingau and has consistently converted the estate to Demeter certification since the 1990s. This Riesling from old vines in Hallgarten embodies his philosophy: uncompromising naturalness, precise minerality and a vinification that gives precedence to terroir. With 12.5% alcohol and a dry orientation, this is a classic Rheingau Riesling that prioritises elegance over power – a wine that rewards patience and bears the hallmark of a vintner who understands the vineyard as a living organism.
Terroir & Origin
Hallgarten sits on the south-westerly exposed heights of the Rheingau, where the vines are rooted in deep loess-loam soils with quartz and phyllite components. The old vine stocks access mineralogical layers denied to younger plantings. The cooler microclimate of the higher-altitude sites produces wines with taut acidity and fine-nerved structure – less opulent than the famous sites along the Rhine bank, yet characterised by vibrant liveliness and long ageing potential.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Kühn’s Riesling vinification follows biodynamic principles: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, maturation on full lees in traditional wooden casks, no oenological interventions whatsoever. The old vines yield concentrated, small-berried grapes with natural balance. The result is a Riesling that does not seek to please through fruitiness, but rather convinces through depth, texture and salinity – a wine that enlivens the glass rather than perfuming it.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This precise, dry Riesling calls for dishes with natural acidity and minerality: oysters, scallops, char or trout with herbs. It also harmonises beautifully with goat’s cheese, asparagus with hollandaise sauce or Asian dishes with lemongrass and ginger. The vibrant acidity makes it an ideal companion for sushi and ceviche.
