Wine Description for R‘ Chardonnay Dry 2022 by Ökonomierat Rebholz

Colour & Appearance
Luminous golden yellow with greenish reflections, brilliant and clear in the glass – a Chardonnay that promises freshness and precision.
Nose
The 2022 Chardonnay „R“ presents itself with impressive clarity: yellow stone fruits, particularly ripe peach and mirabelle plum, meet citrus freshness and a hint of hazelnut. The mineral component of the shell limestone reveals itself in fine chalk and flint notes, which lend the wine depth and tension. With aeration, subtle brioche nuances and a delicate spiciness develop.
Palate
On the palate, the full class of this Grand Cru site reveals itself: taut, focused and with impressive minerality. The saline texture of the shell limestone runs through the entire flavour profile and lends the wine Burgundian character. The fruit remains precise and cool, the acidity is vibrant yet perfectly integrated. A fine creaminess – the result of ageing on fine lees – gives the wine substance without weighing it down.
Finish
Long, mineral and refreshing. The chalk notes and saline freshness linger for minutes and leave an elegant, appetite-stimulating impression. A wine with tension and drive.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from the VDP.Grand Cru site Im Sonnenschein in Siebeldingen, one of the Palatinate’s exceptional terroirs. The south-western slopes at 180-225 metres elevation benefit from 240-million-year-old shell limestone – a geological rarity in the region. This marine soil with its fossils shapes the wine with its characteristic minerality and salinity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Selectively harvested Chardonnay from old vines, vinified with a Burgundian approach. The wine was aged traditionally in wooden barrels, with Rebholz pursuing careful integration. Neither fined nor filtered – pure expression of grape variety and terroir.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A versatile food companion: scallops, turbot in butter, Poulet de Bresse, veal schnitzel with morels or also aged Comté. The minerality harmonises beautifully with oysters and seafood.
Special Features
A Chardonnay that proves the Palatinate can do far more than Riesling. Rebholz is among the pioneers of this variety in Germany and delivers here a wine at international top level – Burgundy-inspired, but with its own distinctive Palatinate character.
