Wine Description for Riesling „Im Sonnenschein“ GG 2020 by Ökonomierat Rebholz
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale, radiant yellow – crystal clear and characterised by youthful freshness.
- Nose
- A wine that takes its time: In its youth, the Sonnenschein 2020 presents itself almost ascetically. Lemon zest and white fruit flesh dominate, underpinned by an impressive mineral texture. Wet slate, stone flour and the saline character of ground oyster shells lend it an almost skeletal structure. Austere herbal notes of summer savory and sage underscore the reserved, still unfinished personality of this wine – a sketch awaiting completion.
- Palate
- Citric and austere on the attack, with pronounced grapefruit bitterness and saline minerality. The striking phenolic structure envelops the acidity like velvet, lending the wine a rough, gripping texture. Despite its spare appearance, the palate reveals surprising fullness – a warm type with substance that has yet to fully unleash its power. The bitter notes are invigorating, almost provocative.
- Finish
- Long and warm, with subtle herbal spice and persistent minerality. The aftertaste recalls citrus and sage, remaining energetic and demanding.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site „Im Sonnenschein“ near Siebeldingen owes its uniqueness to a geological peculiarity: through the subsidence of the Rhine Graben, formations from the Triassic period emerged 220 million years ago. The vines are rooted in muschelkalk-dominated soils at 180 to 225 metres elevation, in pure south-facing exposure with 5 to 20% slope gradient – ideal conditions for mineral-driven Rieslings with depth.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Riesling, hand-harvested and destemmed. Following 24 hours of skin contact, fermentation took place in stainless steel – a purist vinification that allows the terroir to express itself unvarnished.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Grilled courgettes with caper-lemon vinaigrette and cucumber-yoghurt, pan-fried sea bream on white bean purée with salt-lemon beurre blanc or veal tartare with lemon-caper-anchovy emulsion – dishes that echo the wine’s citric freshness and mineral precision.
- Special Characteristics
- A Großes Gewächs that demands patience. This is not a wine for immediate consumption, but a rough diamond that will reveal its true greatness in the years to come. Those who drink it now will experience a fascinating, yet unfinished character – a promise of greatness.
