Tasting note from dated 04.10.2021, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

The location 'Im Sonnenschein' was created by the lowering of the Rhine Graben and the resulting uplift of the Palatinate Forest. As a result, deep Triassic geological formations came to light around Siebeldingen around 220 million years ago. The soils here are strongly determined by shell limestone, the vineyards are situated at an altitude of 180 to 225m above sea level and are laid out with 5 to 20% slopes in a purely southern orientation. The hand-picked grapes were destemmed and fermented in steel after 24 hours of maceration.

Nose

The 2020 Im Sonnenschein Riesling Großes Gewächs from Ökonomierat Rebholz is always deeply citrusy in its youth - lemon zest and the whiteness of fruit mingle with profound mineral notes. Wet table chalk, rock flour and ground oyster shells always make it appear sparse and skeletal on the nose in its juvenile stage. Closed, this sketch of a wine currently shows additional tart accents reminiscent of savory and sage.

Mouth

Citrusy tartness on the nose is currently dominated by grapefruit, salt and its striking phenolic, which velvety coats the acidity. The stylistically warm type with a rough texture also reminds aromatically of citrus and sage with its animating bitter notes - a wine like a block from which the sculpture still has to be chiselled. Full-bodied on the palate with a long, warm finish with subtle herbal spice in the aftertaste.
