In the heart of Sicily, a good 65km southwest of Palermo, is the Vino Lauria winery in Alcamo in the free communal consortium of Trapani. The family business was founded as early as 1958 by Vito's grandfather, who was also called Vito, but had to be abandoned in 1993 due to economic difficulties. From then on, it stood empty as the plaintive backdrop to a long tradition.
Vito Lauria, deeply rooted in his homeland, henceforth harboured the desire to revive the winery and carry his family's vinophile heritage not only into the present, but into the future. Familiar with his grandfather's working methods from an early age, he decided to study viticulture and oenology and enrolled at the University of Udine in Friuli. After graduating in 2003, he worked for two years at several wineries in northern Italy until he returned to Sicily in 2005. Vito first hired on at a local winery as an oenologist for organic viticulture, but in parallel to his salaried job, he prepared the reopening of the family farm. He led this gruelling double life for five years until he finally reopened the old winery in 2010 and went to market with his first vintage. The grounds and the farm buildings were preserved and equipped with the most modern equipment.
