Wine Description for Phaunus Loureiro Amphora 2021 by Aphros Wine

Colour & Appearance
Slightly hazy chamomile yellow with golden reflections – the unfiltered, natural character is immediately apparent and promises authenticity in the glass.
Nose
A fascinating aromatic profile between floral elegance and citric freshness. Candied orange peel and mandarin zest meet grapefruit, whilst chamomile tea and pale floral aromas create a poetic depth. With air contact, a distinctive Earl Grey note with bergamot develops, underpinned by white pepper, marjoram and a hint of cinnamon stick. The tannin-rich texture from skin fermentation is already perceptible on the nose.
Palate
Here the true art of amphora ageing reveals itself: light-footed yet simultaneously impressive aromatic density. The orange and mandarin notes remain present, but never intrusive. A fine tannin lends structure and grip – precisely what makes this orange wine so approachable. The bergamot spice runs through the entire palate, paired with refreshing coolness and compact texture. At just 10.5% alcohol, a masterpiece of balance.
Finish
Medium length, fresh and carried by a delicate tannin structure. The citrus notes fade gently, accompanied by floral hints and that characteristic tea spice.
Terroir & Origin
Loureiro grapes from various south-facing vineyard sites in north-western Portugal, crossing appellation boundaries. Hand-harvested between 10th and 15th September 2021.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Loureiro, destemmed and pressed in an antique basket press. Spontaneous fermentation on the skins in clay amphorae, sealed with beeswax for oxidation control. Six months of skin contact and lees ageing. Biodynamically farmed by Aphros Wine, a pioneer of Portuguese natural wine.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Lamb’s lettuce with baked Camembert, honey and walnuts, couscous with harissa, pomegranate and feta or smoked trout with crème fraîche and dill.
Special Features
An orange wine that convinces sceptics: approachable, fresh and never oxidative. The perfect introduction to the world of amphora wines.
