The Lipari Islands, also known as the Aeolian Islands, are a small group of islands located north of Sicily. With a total area of only about 115 km², the total of seven inhabited islands of volcanic origin were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. In ancient times, the islands were considered the seat of the wind god Aeolus, who was appointed by Zeus as the administrator of the winds. However, it is not only the wind but also the mineral-rich volcanic rock that makes viticulture on these islands so appealing today. Dr. Massimo Lentsch, originally from Kufstein, became stranded on the Aeolian Islands through his passion for sailing. In 2005, he decided to set up a family-run winery on Lipari. Until today, he is the only vintner there who does not only vinify wines for his own use.
